Our submission on strengthening Australia’s trade remedies system focuses on making it faster, fairer, and fit for today’s global dairy market.

Australian dairy competes in an open market against heavily subsidised global producers, while relying on imported inputs and export access to remain competitive. A strong trade remedies system is essential to protect against unfairly priced imports, distorted markets, and sudden import surges that damage local industries.

We support the government’s intent to modernise the system. But it must be more proactive, more accessible, and better equipped to deal with contemporary trade risks.

In our submission, ADIC recommends earlier government-led monitoring of import flows, improved access to trade and customs data, and clearer pathways for industry bodies and upstream businesses to initiate action where material injury occurs. We also call for streamlined evidentiary requirements and stronger international advocacy to address foreign support programs that distort markets but sit outside current WTO rules.

Our position is:

  • spot problems earlier
  • lower barriers to action, and
  • modernise the rules to reflect real-world trade.

Because a credible, data-driven trade remedies system helps ensure Australian dairy can compete on fair terms – at home and on the global stage.
