Secure strategic market access & global preference for Australian dairy

Reducing trade and regulatory barriers ensures Australian dairy remains globally competitive, meeting the growing demand for safe, high-quality and sustainably produced dairy products from international consumers.

Strategic trade initiatives can deliver long term value creation by opening new markets, enhancing price premiums, and reducing vulnerability to low-cost dairy imports.

Securing access to priority, high-value international markets is critical to growing Australia’s dairy export sector and maintaining the viability of local dairy processors in the face of rising import competition.

With 25 per cent of the dairy consumed domestically now imported, protecting and enabling local production is both an economic imperative and a food security priority.

By advancing market access, we can bolster export revenue, secure jobs, and reinforce the economic vitality of regional Australia.

ADPF’s key policy and negotiation priorities include:
  • countering restrictive EU Free Trade Agreement provisions to preserve the right to use Australia’s iconic and culturally significant dairy product names
  • strengthening partnerships and accelerating opportunities in Asia and the Middle East where demand for high quality, nutritious Australian dairy products is expanding rapidly
  • accelerating opportunities in Southeast Asia, including broadening participation in Indonesia’s School Milk Program to cover the full spectrum of Australian dairy, and
  • leveraging the sustainability credentials earned through the Australian Dairy Sustainability Framework and company's initiatives to differentiate in export markets and shape international standards aligned to our strengths.
Identify, expand, and prioritise strategic trade partnerships that advance market access, reduce barriers for Australian dairy products, and protect against imports.

To deliver this, ADPF recommends:

  • secure favourable trade agreements and expand access in priority markets (Southeast Asia, Middle East, Europe)
  • protect local markets by engaging in international negotiations to safeguard fair trade
  • work with trading partners to eliminate regulatory hurdles that disadvantage Australian dairy products
  • align regulatory standards across key export markets to streamline trade and compliance, particularly on sustainability.
