Australian dairy processors are proving that emissions reduction and strong regional manufacturing go hand in hand.

Since 2010/11, our sector has reduced absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 40.5 per cent, alongside a 34.5 per cent reduction in emissions intensity and 85 per cent of waste now diverted from landfill.

ADPF is proud to release our second industry publication, Stories of Sustainable Progress, showcasing the investments driving these results on factory floors across regional Australia, such as:

  • biogas projects at Saputo Australia and Australian Consolidated Milk
  • solar installations at Noumi, That’s Amore Cheese and Provico
  • efficiency upgrades at Lactalis Australia, Burra Foods and Fonterra Australia
  • about 90 per cent waste diversion rates achieved by Bega Group and Bulla Dairy Foods
  • innovative packaging redesign at The a2 Milk Company, The Yoghurt Shop, Ballantyne Foods, Brownes Dairy and others.

These investments are not just about sustainability targets – they are about resilience, productivity and jobs in regional communities.

Importantly, co-investment between industry and government is helping de-risk major infrastructure upgrades. Goulburn Valley Creamery’s $50 million water treatment investment, supported by the Victorian Government, will double milk throughput, create new jobs and recycle treated water back onto local farms.

While the job isn’t finished, the direction is clear, and the momentum is real.

Australian dairy consumers can have confidence locally produced dairy is being made by an industry investing in its environmental, economic and social future.
