“Don’t mince words: definitions of meat and other animal products” report

For too long, and to the detriment of the dairy industry, plant-based products have misused dairy terms – but today we’re a big step closer to truth in labelling laws.

ADPF, and the dairy industry as a whole, welcomes the Senate Inquiry report released last week that backs our concerns over the labelling and marketing of plant proteins being presented as dairy milk alternatives.

The Report has been released with nine recommendations, including a review of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Code and exemption of named dairy “categories” – meaning terms like soy milk should not be permitted.

The dairy industry has been advocating for change since the 1980s, as it’s inappropriate for one industry to gain an unfair advantage in the marketplace by leveraging another’s brand, reputation, and credentials – and ultimately mislead the consumer.
Australian consumers should not be misled. Labelling and nutritional information should be transparent.

We now need all political parties aligned and supporting the Report’s recommendations, prioritising the development of industry guidelines to inform the labelling and marketing practices of plant-based protein products and a mandatory regulatory framework, in consultation with industry.
