FSANZ consultation: Nutrition labelling

ADPF has submitted a response to Food Standards Australia New Zealand’s (FSANZ) consultation on nutrition labelling, including the Health Star Rating (HSR) system and Nutrition Information Panel (NIP).

Under the banner of Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) we called for essential updates to ensure fair outcomes for dairy foods.

Until the HSR system and algorithm deliver fair and scientifically supported outcomes for all Five Food Group (FFG) foods, the dairy industry cannot fully endorse its implementation and asked for the following issues to be addressed:

  • Improve the HSR of core, everyday FFG cheeses aligned with the latest scientific evidence, so that 90 per cent score 3 stars or above
Development of an ongoing comprehensive education campaign, aligned with the ADG recommendations to build consumer understanding about nutrition and how to select core foods in line with national dietary guidelines, as well as the role of the HSR.
Re-affirm the purpose of HSR system for packaged, retail food and beverage products only, and discourage the use of the HSR system in policy settings beyond this.
