Australia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (Aus-EU FTA) negotiations

The thirteenth round of Australia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (Aus-EU FTA) negotiations is due to take place in October.

The dairy industry continues to work on Geographical Indicators (GI) and cheese labelling to retain the right to call dairy products by their common food name (including the elimination of any potential evocation implications for Greek Yoghurt).

It is important that Australia retains this right, with industry’s central priority being to avoid any confusion for the benefit of Australian consumers.

The Aus-EU FTA is expected to be finalised by February 2023. With the environmental policy satisfied, following the announcement of Australia’s 43% GHGE reduction pledge by 2030, focus now turns to naming rights for cheeses such as feta and parmesan.
